Cells - Pneumocytes

Eastern Black Rhino - Tissue - Cell Type - Pneumocytes

                         Function:
~ Type I - form the alveolar wall structure, allow exchange of gases.
~ Type II - replaces damaged type I cells, production and secretion of pulmonary surfactant.

                          Feedback:
Whenever Type I pneumocyte cells are damaged (possibly from an acute lung injury), Type II pneumocyte cells will respond and replace them, taking over their functions of forming the alveolar wall structure and allowing for the exchange of gases.

                         Fun fact:
Due to the flat shape of Type 1 pneumocyte cells, they cover about 95% of the surface of the alveoli but are only 40% of the actual cells.

Tissue - Alveoli

Eastern Black Rhino - Circulatory Organ - Tissue - Alveoli

                    Functions:
                                  - Oxygen exchange through inflation and deflation

                    Major cell types:
                                  -  Pneumocytes (Type I and II)

                     Fun Fact:
                                  - Millions of alveoli are on each of the lungs (they look like clusters of grapes)

Organ - Lungs

                                                   Eastern Black Rhino - Lungs

                        Functions:
                             - Gas Exchange
                             - Respiration

                       Major Tissues:
                              - Bronchiole
                              - Alveoli

                         Fun Fact:
Mammals share extremely similar anatomy when it comes to circulatory organs.

Organ System (Circulatory)

Eastern Black Rhino - Circulatory System

                      Functions:
                           - Delivers oxygen, nutrients, and hormones throughout the body.
                           - Removes carbon dioxide and other metabolic wastes from the body.

                       Major Organs:
                            - Heart
                            - Blood vessels (capillaries, arteries, veins.)

                       Fun Fact:
                              - Eastern Black Rhinos, being mammals, have a double-loop circulatory system which means blood without tons of oxygen is pumped to the lungs. Blood with more oxygen in it from the lungs returns to the heart. The second loop carries blood between the heart and the body. Blood with enough oxygen in it is pumped throughout the body and blood without enough oxygen in it returns to the heart.
